When thinking of individuals who communicate effectively, I
immediately think of my administrator at work. She has the ability to exhort
others and motivate them to do their jobs. She is also effective in assigning
tasks and correcting people in love. She understands how to say things so that
others are not offended. The times when she has had to correct me she has done
it in a way that motivates me to be better. Just when I am feeling discouraged,
she has the words to encourage me to continue my work with young children and
their families. What I value the most about her communication is her ability
and willingness to listen to her staff and implement their ideas. As a result,
I feel like a valued team member of the early childhood program. When I talk to
my friends and families, I realize that they do not have the same experiences
at work that I do. I am appreciative of my administrator’s effective
communication skills even more.
I would like to model some of my communication skills after
my administrator in certain situations. I would like to have the skill of
communicating with others without being offensive. I believe that there is a
way to talk to others without hurting their feelings. Sometimes, I can be very
blunt and end up hurting others. It is never my intention to cause harm or hurt their feelings. Therefore, I would like to learn how to express my thoughts in a way
that they are honest, yet respectful.
Krista,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you have an awesome administrator! You are lucky to be working under someone who knows how to effectively communicate. Effective communication skills are crucial in our professional field. In the past I have experienced administrators that don't understand how to communicate their wishes appropriately. As a result the entire school staff felt unappreciated and frustrated most of the time. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Krista,
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky to have an administrator who is so respective and appreciates your work. I am currently in the opposite side of having an administrator who talks openly about others behind their back and I cannot trust her. I am really struggling with all this and hope this class will help me to convey my feelings in an appropriate manner.
Imagine how much energy agencies spend evaluating an administrator on matters of budget and benchmarks and measurable outcomes.
ReplyDeleteYou remind us that the job of a leader is more abstract, less tangible than ECERS scores and Academic Performance Indices.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts after you implement some of the strategies that you have learned from your "administrator" (there has to be a better word than that, doesn't there?)
Hi Krista,
ReplyDeleteyou are blessed to have a wonderful administrator, I must admit that I am also blessed to have a supportive administrator; who really appreciates his staff members. It is wonderful to have an administrator who communicates effectively, my supervisor always articulate and is well prepared for meetings.
Krista,
ReplyDeleteI hope that my new supervisor is as amazing as yours! My previous job I always felt like I only heard about the negative things and was not given much direction on how to make improvements. You are truly blessed to have someone that keeps you motivated and striving to do your best.
Hello Krista,
ReplyDeleteAs you describe your supervisor, I bet that a person passion for what she believes in drives her communication towards others as she transmits motivation in others to do an effective job. My boss is th same way. When I meet people like our bosses, I know that they are in a field of work becasue they view it as a passion and not just a profession.
Krista,
ReplyDeleteThe way you've described your administrator is wonderful. I'm happy that you have such a wonderful relationship. Keep being the person you are and I truely hope your boss stays the same as well. Good luck in our class and your endeavors.
Straight to the point is always good. I'm a pretty straight forward person myself. I always try to communicate without allowing my perswonal feelings. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI feel that having an administrator that is able to communicate effectively with staff not just in what they say but also in how they say it is really key because I think that the way that people communicate is equally or more important than what it actually is that you say.
